Caltech Graduate School Research (Chemistry department): My research is divided into multiple projects, and falls primarily under the carbon cycle side of the group. I’ve recently worked on quantifying sources of errors in measurements of column averaged CO2 (XCO2) and other gases by low (0.5 cm-1) resolution solar-viewing spectrometers ( EM27/SUN ) [1] . Paul Wennberg Credit: Michelle Feynman for Caltech Methane and ethane—two of the major components of natural gas—are measured above the Caltech campus using a remote sensing instrument that utilizes the historic solar telescope located on the roof of Caltech's Linde+Robinson laboratory. Wennberg, an atmospheric chemist and environmental geochemist, studies the influence of human activity on the global atmosphere. We talked with Wennberg by Zoom to get his take on what we can learn by observing COVID-19's impact on air pollution, and why we are not seeing the same dramatic effects in the Los Angeles area that have been observed elsewhere in the world.

Workshop Mechanical and Civil Engineers shape our physical environment from the cities we live in, the machines we use, the way we travel, the energy that powers these to delivering the water we need. Our research addresses fundamental issues that represent roadblocks in critical technologies towards engineering our physical environment.
