They met while teaching Sabbath school at Temple Emanu-El. The two young women shared a dedication to historical scholarship, and in later years would call each other "Watson and Holmes," and were photographed in deerstalkers, wielding magnifying glasses. Stern and Rostenberg wrote biographies, scholarly studies and histories—both together and separately—but their greatest art was not writing. (The style, both stiff and florid, has the static, decorative quality of good wallpaper rather than of literature.) Leona Rostenberg, a rare-book scholar and dealer who with her partner of 50 years, Madeleine B. Madeleine Bettina Stern, born in New York City on 1 July 1912, and Leona Rostenberg, born in New York on 28 Dec. 1908, first met in 1929 while teaching Hebrew School at Manhattan's Temple Emanu-El. At the time, Stern was a freshman at Barnard College, and Rostenberg was completing her undergraduate studies at New York University.

Rostenberg and Stern often used a phrase that sums up exactly what makes an antiquarian bookseller different from her other bookselling peers: In their memoir, Old Books, Rare Friends, they write: “As far as we know, the word Finger-Spitzengefuhl never made it to a dictionary. It was originally Herbert Reichner [another bookseller to whom Rostenberg was an apprentice] who passed it on to us.
